George Mason Legend Tony Skinn is Returning to the NCAA Tournament with Seton Hall

Tony Skinn, the starting point guard on the 2006 George Mason men's basketball team that captured the imagination of the nation with their improbable run to that year's Final Four, is returning to the big dance for the first time since, after the Seton Hall Pirates received an at-large bid to this year's NCAA Tournament
Skinn, who was born in Nigeria and grew up in Tacoma Park, MD, arrived on the Fairfax campus prior to the 2004 season with three years of eligibility and made every one of them count. After graduating Mason in 2006, Skinn played professionally for a few years in Europe, and was a member of the Orlando Magic's Summer League team in 2008.
In 2012, Skinn was a member of the Nigerian National Basketball team which advanced all the way to the Summer Olympics in London, England. At the Olympics, Skinn showed the world what he was made of when he famously broke NBA all star James Harden's ankles and sent him to the floor in a full split, with the same wicked crossover that dazzled Mason Nation for three seasons.
Prior to the 2015-16 season, Skinn joined his former Mason assistant coach Erik Konkol at Louisiana Tech, where Konkol is now the head man. Skinn helped the Bulldogs to back-to-back 23-win seasons and 63 wins overall in his three years in Ruston, LA.
Last April, Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard introduced Skinn as his newest assistant coach, replacing Pirates legend Shaheen Holloway, who was named the head coach at St. Peter's University in Jersey City.
"Tony has had great success both as a student-athlete and as a coach and, with his work in recruiting and skill development, he will bring a hard-working mentality that meshes well with our team's identity," said Willard at the time of the hiring.
Skinn was also one of Patrick Ewing's finalists for an assistant job at Georgetown before he landed at Seton Hall.
With the Pirates officially on their way to this year's NCAA Tournament, now-Coach Skinn will see if he can bring a little bit of that Mason March magic to South Orange, NJ.
Seton Hall will be the #10 seed in the Midwest Region and will open tournament play this Thursday as the underdogs against a very tough Wofford squad, in Jacksonville, FL
The #7 seed Terriors are coming off a fantastic season in which they finished 29-4 and dominated the Southern Conference. Wofford was nationally ranked for the first time in program history this season, and in many ways resembles that Mason team from 2006. Luckily for Seton Hall, their assistant coach has experience in this area.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. * St. Louis University used a late run to take its first lead of the game and then fended off St. Bonaventure in the closing minute to post a 55-53 win in the championship game of the Atlantic 10 tournament and earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Saint Louis routs Davidson 67-44 to reach A-10 title game
NEW YORK - Tramaine Isabell Jr. had 19 points and eight assists to spark sixth-seeded Saint Louis to a 67-44 rout of second-seed Davidson in the Atlantic 10 tournament semifinals on Saturday. Javon Bess scored 24 points for the Billikens (22-12), who play fourth-seed St. Bonaventure in Sunday's championship game.

St. Bonaventure routs Rhode Island, storms into A-10 championship game
NEW YORK - St. Bonaventure will play for the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament championship, despite beginning the season with a 4-10 record, despite trailing by 15 points in its semifinal matchup with Rhode Island.

The George Mason men's basketball season ended Friday afternoon with a 68-57 loss to 4th seeded St. Bonaventure Bonnies in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.
Mason's season is now likely over, and it ended in the A-10 quarterfinals for the third consecutive season. The Patriots finished the year with an 18-15 overall record, and while there certainly are some positives to take away from it, the end-result is a bit of a letdown considering the lofty expectations the team had back in the Fall.
“We had some ups and downs,” junior Justin Kier said after the game, “but we had a lot of ups, and those are the things you remember.”
Friday's loss also marks the end of the legendary Mason career of Otis Livingston II. The four-year starter will go down in history as one the greats in the George Mason basketball.
Livingston finishes his college career fourth in school history in points scored with 1,865, second in assists with 493, third in 3-point field goals with 203, and first in both free throw percentage at .859, and starts with 132.
He will be missed, but always remembered in Mason Nation.
On the court, the Patriots were playing catch-up all day, but managed to keep the game interesting down to the final minutes Friday. Mason was visibly fatigued, especially down the stretch, after playing a nail-biter against George Washington on Thursday, but it's hard to pin the loss solely on that, because it didn't look all that different from Patriots' season as a whole.

The Patriots were again led by Kier, who had clearly run out of gas by the end of this one after playing 39 minutes the day before. The junior finished with 20 points and 7 rebounds on the day.
Freshman Jordan Miller continued to impress and wasn't visibly rattled by the big spot, as he dropped 13 points and pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds on the Bonnies.
In his final game as a Patriot, Livingston finished with 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.
“We didn’t play well offensively, but we fought and competed and dealt with [foul trouble] and scratched and clawed and got back in the game,” GMU coach Dave Paulsen said. “That’s kind of the way the season has been: a lot of injuries, a lot of adversity, and every step of the way, this group of guys has been a lot of fun to coach.”
Mason started off slow defensively, but did turn it around and limited St. Bonaventure to 33% shooting in the second half. Mason also held a 43-34 advantage on the glass and outscored the Bonnies 26-16 in the paint. But none of that was enough to overcome their offensive woes.
The Patriots shot just 35% for the game and were an abysmal 8-for-28 from the beyond the arc. Mason also only converted on 7 of their 14 free throw attempts and had 9 shots blocked. Playing from behind, GMU spent much of the afternoon settling for deep shots, regardless of the fact that they were dominant in the paint.
St. Bonaventure, on the other hand, shot an impressive 42% from deep and torched the Patriots with 10 3-pointers.
The Bonnies were led by two impressive freshmen, Dominick Welch and Kyle Lofton, who both played the entire game and scored 20 points apiece. Welch and Lofton were responsible for all 10 of St. Bonaventure's 3-point field goals.
“Every time you turned around, [Welch] hit a backbreaking three,” said Paulsen. “Most of them were challenged pretty well.”
Senior LaDarien Griffin, who also did not sit, chipped in 10 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Bonnies.
The Patriots now look ahead to the 2020 campaign, minus the services of the aforementioned Livingston, and Jaier Grayer, whose absence this season, can not be understated. Though the senior appeared in only seven games this year due to a foot injury, he started at least 31 games for Mason the previous three seasons and finishes his Mason career as an 11 PPG scorer. While he now plans to leave the program as a graduate transfer, it's hard to imagine that the presence of a healthy Grayer, wouldn't have given the Patriots a boost this season.
Aside from Livingston and Grayer, who wasn't around most of this year anyway, Mason will be returning the bulk of their squad next season, led by Kier, the A-10's Most Improved Player in 2019.
“He has a chance to be one of the best players in the league,” Paulsen said of Kier. “We don’t want to burden him with undue expectations but also getting him to see what he is capable of when he is completely locked in like he has been the last three or four games.”
While there is much optimism surrounding the Patriots and the future of their program, it was the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure who stole the limelight on Friday, and showed us all that their future, and present, is just as promising.

Mason forced six straight missed attempts from the Bonnies to open the game as the Green & Gold jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Patriots would make just one of their next nine shots, as SBU used a 15-3 spurt to move in front by 11 (20-9) at the 8:47 mark of the opening half. Bona went up 12 at 23-11, but on the strength of back-to-back triples from Kier, Mason pulled back to within four (23-19) with 5:33 to go in the stanza. A 7-0 spurt put Bona back up 11 (30-19). Mason cut it to six at 30-24, but the Patriots could not score over the final 2:34 as Bona went up 10 (34-24) at the break. The Bonnies extended the lead to 15 at 42-27, but the Patriots scored eight of the next 11 to move back within eight at 45-37. A triple from Livingston II pulled Mason back within seven (49-42) with 9:31 to go in the game, but the Bonnies answered with eight-straight to move ahead by 15 at 57-42. SBU led 60-49 with 5:05 remaining, but at that point, Mason used an 8-2 spurt to get back within seven (62-55) with 2:26 left. Mason had a chance to get it to five after a stop but could not convert, and SBU held on from there to wrap up the victory.

George Mason is going to miss Jaire Grayer a hell of a lot more than Otis Livingston on the court. You can bank on that. Rhode Island cuts VCU's A-10 tournament short with 75-70 upset victory
The beginning of the second half of Friday's Atlantic 10 tournament quarterfinal between VCU and Rhode Island was a microcosm of the value of the Rams' Marcus Santos-Silva. The 6-7, 250-pound forward, already had a double-double by the end of the first half, and scored each of the first 8 points of the second half for VCU.

What a nail-biter!
The 5th seeded George Mason men's basketball team survived a scare in their Atlantic 10 tournament matchup with 12th seeded George Washington on Thursday afternoon, using a superb defensive effort to escape with a 61-57 win at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The Patriots now move on to Friday's quarterfinals, against 4th seeded St. Bonaventure.
The Colonials weren't too shabby on the defensive end themselves, using a 1-3-1 zone defense that gave Mason fits all afternoon, but when all was said and done, the Patriots were just a little bit better and limited GW to just 35% shooting on the day, and a paltry 29% in the second half. Mason also held a 41-32 advantage on the glass.
"I thought we really stepped up our defensive effort in the second half especially with the offensive adversity we faced," GMU coach Dave Paulsen said. "We went 10 deep and every guy who played gave us a key contribution."
Mason is now 3-0 against their Revolutionary Rivalry foe, and have advanced to A-10 quarterfinals for the third straight season.

Senior Otis Livingston was the only other Patriot to score in double-figures. The Linden, NJ product kicked in 12 points, while freshman Jordan Miller grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Colonials were led by Armel Potter and Justin Mazzulla's 12 and 10 points, respectively. GW also had three players who tallied 9 points apiece, including Javier Langarica, who pulled down a game-high 12 boards. The Colonials finished the season with a 9-24 record.
The Patriots, on the other hand, live to fight another day, an outcome which was anything but certain down the stretch.
Aside from the hype of the A-10 tournament and a 2:30 PM tip-off in the middle of the week, Thursday's game very much resembled much of Mason's season to this point. There was streaky shooting, too many turnovers, missed opportunities from the charity stripe, and a ferocious defense that was enough to carry the Patriots to victory over a team that they definitely should have beat.
Now Mason can look ahead to Friday, where they'll attempt to advance past the A-10 quarterfinals for the first time since joining the league, when they face a far more polished opponent in the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure.
The wins have not come easy for George Mason against the elite teams in the A-10, and St. Bonaventure will likely enjoy a home-court advantage in Brooklyn, so Friday's quarterfinals will present quite the challenge for the Patriots. But you can rest easy, for at least one night, Mason Nation, because the Patriots' season will go on.

Mason led 31-24 with 2:20 left in the half, but GW rattled off the final seven points of the stanza to tie it up (31-31) at the break. The Patriots started the second half just 1-of-5 from the floor but remained locked in on the defensive end to keep it tied up at 35-35 four minutes into the period. GW moved back in front by three at 42-39, but Mason used a 5-0 spurt – capped by a Javon Greene 3-pointer – to go up 45-42 with 10:56 remaining. From there, Mason had a number of open shots over the next few minutes but could not convert them, as GW used a 10-2 spurt to go up 52-47 with just 6:22 to go in the game. At that point, Mason held the Colonials scoreless over the next two and a half minutes, while posting five points of their own to tie it at 52-52 with under four to go. GW went up 54-52, but Livingston II hit a critical to 3-pointer to give Mason the lead (55-54) with 2:54 to go. Then, Kier hit a difficult jumper to put the Patriots up three (57-54) with 1:29 left. Mason got it up to five (59-54) and GW could not move closer than four for the remainder of the game.

There are four teams in Division I that call themselves the Rams. Three of them play in the Atlantic 10. VCU is the alpha Ram. The Rocky Mountain Ram. The VCU Rams earned the 1 seed in the 2019 Atlantic 10 Tournament by winning their final 12 games and finishing 16-2 in-conference overall.

Miller leads George Mason over George Washington 81-65
WASHINGTON - Jordan Miller had 17 points and nine rebounds and Justin Kier posted 13 points and nine assists as George Mason topped George Washington 81-65 on Saturday. Otis Livingston II had 14 points for George Mason (17-14, 11-7 Atlantic 10 Conference), which ended its four-game road losing streak.

FAIRFAX - Shortly before the end of the first half on Tuesday night at George Mason, Marcus Evans launched a 3-point attempt from the left wing. The ball swished through the net, and Evans ran back up the court in jubilation.

Freshman Jamal Hartwell II Helps George Mason Bust Losing Streak - Slackie Brown
FAIRFAX, Va - Even though leading scorer Justin Kier was out of the starting lineup because he was late to a team workout, the George Mason Patriots handled business on Wednesday evening at Eagle Bank Arena. After leading Richmond 32-29 at halftime, they put their foot on the gas in the second half and wound up with a convincing 77-63 win.

The George Mason men's basketball team blew a double-digit lead and a golden opportunity in the Atlantic 10 Saturday, as they dropped a tough one, 79-78, to Duquesne on homecoming at EagleBank Arena.
With the loss, the Patriots fell to 15-12 on the season and into a three-way tie for 4th place in the A-10, along with the aforementioned Dukes and St. Bonaventure, at 9-5.
Here's the story from George Mason University Athletics:
Offensively, Mason put forth a solid effort with a balanced attack. Senior Otis Livingston II and Sophomore Javon Greene led the way for the Patriots, scoring 18 points apiece. Livingston also dished out a game-high 5 assists, and Greene pulled down 6 rebounds.
Junior Justin Kier contributed 14 and 7 rebounds, and redshirt-junior Jared Reuter added 9 points and 6 rebounds of his own. Freshman ordan Miller also continued to shine. The first year sensation notched 11 rebounds, including a career-high 10 on the offensive end.
The Dukes countered with their own, and perhaps more impressive balanced attack, led by Tavian Dunn-Martin's game-high 22 points. Frankie Hughes chipped in 15 points and Marcus Weathers grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with his 14 points. Michael Hughes also scored 11 points.
"That one really stinks," Mason coach Dave Paulsen said. "I thought the game was decided near the end of the first half where we got sloppy and casual with the lead. We got up and we tried to hit the knockout punch. We need to show maturity. There's no such thing as a knock-out punch in basketball. When you give a good team like Duquesne a sense of life, then you're going to be in for what we had in the second half."
At the risk of pulverizing a dead horse, it needs to be pointed out once again that if Mason isn't playing ferocious defense, they're probably in trouble. Such was the case on Saturday
The Patriots were sharp defensively in the first half, holding Duquesne to 37% shooting from the floor, the Dukes turned it on in the second frame. Duquesne shot 53% from the field in the second half, and that combined with Mason's inability to get key stops down the stretch, was just a little too much for the Patriots to overcome.
With the top four teams slated to earn a double-bye into the quarterfinals of next months A-10 Tournament in Brooklyn, NY, this is the type of loss that could come back to bite Mason in a big way.
The Patriots have four games left on their schedule before Brooklyn, and they'll undoubtedly need to be in "must win" mode for all of them if they have any hopes of clinching one of those double-byes i the tournament.
The homestretch gets underway this Wednesday February 27th, when George Mason will host Richmond at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia. Tip-off is set for 7 PM ET with the game streaming on ESPN+.

Mason made six of its first nine shots and rocketed out of the gate to lead 17-2 just six minutes into the game. That run included a pair of 3-pointers from Livingston II. Duquesne cut it to 11 (19-8), but the Patriots used a 6-0 run to extend the edge to 19 (31-12) after a 3-pointer from Greene at the 9:03 mark. Mason led 38-24 with 4:02 to go in the stanza, but Duquesne closed the half on a 10-4 spurt to take a 42-34 lead into the break. The Patriots got the lead back to 10 (46-36) at the 17:42 mark of the second half, but Duquesne used a 6-0 spurt to move within four (46-42). The Dukes were within one (54-53) with 11:41 to go, but Mason ripped off five-straight, including a nice jumper from Jamal Hartwell II, to go back up six (59-53) at the 9:04 mark. A 3-pointer from Livingston II kept Mason ahead by five (66-61) with 7:08 to go. With the Patriots leading 70-66, Duquesne made its move, scoring five-straight to take its first lead of the game (71-70) with 4:53 left. Mason quickly went back up two (73-71) on a triple from Greene and led by one (76-75) after Kier nailed a 3-pointer with 2:37 to go. Greene converted a jumper with 1:57 left to make it 78-75, but that's the last time the Patriots would score. Frankie Hughes hit a big 3-pointer to tie the game at 78. Then, Michael Hughes was fouled with 57 seconds left and made the game-winning free throw. The Patriots could not score on their final two possessions. Mason had a good look at the end, but a well-placed shot from Reuter rimmed out.
