Gretzky was traded to LA for a package that included
Reports from the New York Times in 1988 indicate that Rangers GM Phil Espositio was approached by Edmonton GM Glen Sather about Gretzky at the draft that June.
The Oilers said that they approached the Rangers because their owners at the time, Gulf and Western, "could afford him."
Espositio said at the time that he was interested in Gretzky but that once they started discussing terms he lost interest.

Strome Goal Lifts Oilers Past Bruins

BOSTON -- Ryan Strome scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period, and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Boston Bruins 4-2 on Sunday at TD Garden. Strome took a pass from Leon Draisaitl in the high slot 2:07 into the third and fired it past Boston goaltender Tuukka Rask for a 3-2 lead.
