Yankees Pound Red Sox to Clinch Home Field, Tie Home Run Record

BOSTON — If you have known for a while that winning a divisional title was nothing more than a fantasy, the only way to get into October was through one of two other doors, which aren’t very attractive.

Especially if you had to leave home on a cross-country flight to play one game with the winner advancing to the ALDS and the loser getting ready for the offseason.

“The first preference is to win the division,’’ Brett Gardner said of the AL East, where the Yankees will finish second to the Red Sox. “The next big thing is to play the wild-card game at home. It’s a good feeling to be finally done with it.’’
