The 2019 season was supposed to be a breakthrough affair for coach Dave Paulsen and the George Mason men's basketball team, but it's been more of a nightmare in the early-going.
After stumbling out of the gate with two losses at home, the Patriots took their act to Statesboro, GA Tuesday night, and for a while, it appeared as if the Patriots were destined for an easy victory over Georgia Southern, to finally get off the schneid.
Junior Jaire Grayer matched a career high with 25 points, including five 3-pointers, and sophomore Justin Kier chipped in 20 points of his own, but the Eagles, led by Tookie Brown's 25, and Quan Jackson's 21 points respectively, rallied from a double-digit deficit to capture a 98-89 victory. Mason falls 0-3 on the season, as their downward spiral continues.
More from the Associated Press:
While the season is still young, and conference play hasn't even started yet, it's officially time for the Patriots to hit the panic button! For a program with lofty expectations, in a league that consistently sends multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament, these early season woes are troubling, and won't do much to boost Mason's resume come March.
Ouch!
Buckle up, Mason Nation. This could be a bumpy ride.

Jaire Grayer knocked down 5 of 6 from 3-point range and scored 18 points to propel the Patriots (0-3) to a 54-34 lead at halftime. But Brown, who had seven points at intermission, and Jackson, who missed all three of his shots and didn't score, heated up in the second half. The Eagles (2-0) got a layup and slam dunk from Jackson to open play and set the tone after intermission. Montae Glenn's rebound basket knotted the score at 65 with 8:50 left to play and Brown's driving layup 30 seconds later gave Georgia Southern the lead for good.

Things you didn't think you'd tweet in October: George Mason is 0-3 and essentially eliminated from the at-large picture on November 13th. Beyond brutality.— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) November 14, 2018
