In a city with two teams in every major professional sport, rivalries don't get more intense than the one between New York's two hockey clubs, and their die-hard fans.
The conflict has been pretty one-sided lately, as the Rangers were win-less in their last eight contests against their crosstown rivals, including a 7-5 loss to the Islanders last week in Brooklyn.
On Wednesday, the Rangers got a little revenge with a blowout win over the Islanders at Madison Square Garden.
Apparently, this was a little too much for one Islanders fan to handle, and he took his frustrations out on a Rangers fan by slicing him up like a New York pizza.
According to Fox News, the incident occurred at approximately 9:45 PM, as patrons were exiting the arena. A witness reported that a man wearing an Islanders jersey pulled out a knife and slashed a Rangers fan in the face and neck.
“It was two guys in hockey jerseys fighting it out. One was cutting the other. When we got there, he was bleeding and he was down.” said an MSG security guard.
“He was down and out,” added another witness. “He was bleeding from his nose to his cheek. Someone was holding his neck steady while another guy called 911.”
The alleged attacker, who was not identified in reports, was arrested. His motives for the attack remain unknown. The victim was taken to the hospital, and his condition was not immediately known.
Hockey is often criticized as being too violent of a sport, but the on-ice mischief is nothing compared to some of the antics you'll see in the stands (and elsewhere). This is just a sad commentary on the current state of sports fans.
