The Monday Morning Quarterback has written extensively about the Giants' desire to keep Ben McAdoo on as offensive coordinator, regardless of who the next coach is. In fact, they love him so much, that they made him a candidate to be their next head coach. However, Newsday is reporting that if ex-Bills coach Doug Marrone gets the Giants job, McAdoo could be out as offensive coordinator.
What a colossal mistake this would be for the Giants. You fired your future Hall-of-Fame coach, and gave up on an offense your team, especially your quarterback, thrived in, for Doug Marrone? Are you kidding me?
It's no secret that the Giants would prefer to hire a coach with NFL experience over a rookie, and Marrone fits that mold, but barely. Marrone was the head coach of the Bills for only two seasons. After two years of sub-.500 football in Buffalo, Marrone quit on his team by opting out of his contract. At the time, most people around the league were impressed with how he turned Buffalo around, so Marrone was under the impression that he'd land another head coaching gig without a problem, but he was wrong. The Jets were very interested in hiring him until his interview with them. To say the least, the Jets weren't impressed and Marrone just flamed out. He ended up as the offensive line coach in football's Siberia, Jacksonville.
For some reason, the Giants are seriously interested in this guy. While it would be a mistake to hire Marrone, Giants fans could live with that. Losing McAdoo means your 35-year old quarterback, Eli Manning, will be forced to learn his third new offense in four seasons, and that the team will abandon the system, in which Manning has played the best football of his career.
Let's hope Newsday is way off-base on this one, otherwise trouble could be brewing in East Rutherford.
Meanwhile in Philadelphia, the Eagles are preparing to interview former Giants coach Tom Coughlin for their vacant head coaching job. The Monday Morning Quarterback will be following that development closely, so check back for more breaking news.
