The Monday Morning Quarterback

Tom Coughlin's Future Remains Unclear

The New York Giants closed out their 2015 season with a disappointing 35-30 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. The Giants finish the season at 6-10 and have secured a top-10 pick in this Spring's NFL Draft.

Coming into Sunday's season finale, news of Tom Coughlin's impending resignation had been circulating, but the coach gave no indication of that being the case at his postgame press conference. Coughlin met with general manager Jerry Reese prior to Sunday's contest against Philadelphia. The coach was informed that no decision on his future had been made.

Giants' co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch haven't spoken to each other about Coughlin's future yet, but the two are scheduled to meet on Monday. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio is reporting a possible rift between team ownership, with Mara wanting to keep Coughlin in place, and Tisch opting instead for a coaching change.

Coughlin still has one year left on his contract, so should he decide not to resign, the Giants would have to fire him if they want to go in another direction. In the past, the Giants have shied away from employing coaches in the final year of their deals, opting to either extend their contracts or replace them before entering a contract year.

Should the Giants decide to go another way, their options for replacing Coughlin would be limited, as there isn't a single coach available at the moment, with a resume anywhere close to Coughlin. The Monday Morning Quarterback has written extensively about this, and why the Giants would be best served in retaining their coach.

For some reason, Reese, the man responsible for assembling the Giants' underachieving roster, remains immune to any talk of being replaced.

Things are heating up around the Giants for the first time in months, and things appear as though they're about to get interesting. Hopefully we will know more in the next couple of days, so stay tuned to The Monday Morning Quarterback for breaking news.
