Yankees Blow it Against Horrible O's

[ PHOTO: SPORTSNET NEW YORK ]

Brendan Kuty, The Star Ledger

NEW YORK -- The autopsy report for the Yankees' loss Sunday will read:

Self-inflicted gunshot wound to the foot.

No other way to describe an awful loss at terrible time to the worst team in the league.

The Yankees fell, 6-3, to the 110-loss Orioles at Yankee Stadium -- a day after clinching a playoff spot with an extra-innings victory.

NEW YORK –  Aaron Hicks and the New York Yankees reached the playoffs the same way they played the regular season: They got hurt, stood up and kept on going.

Hicks doubled home the winning run in the 11th inning , just after a foul ball to an ankle sent him sprawling to the dirt face-first in pain, and the Yankees clinched an AL wild card for the second straight year with a 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.

"It hurts. It's going to be sore tomorrow, that's for sure," Hicks said after limping to his locker, his left ankle taped. "I think after I hit the ball, it was kind of all adrenaline."

Rookie manager Aaron Boone will lead the Yankees into the winner-take-all Oct. 3 wild-card game, most likely against Oakland. The Yankees are 1½ games ahead of the Athletics for home-field advantage and are 53-27 at home this season.

The 2018 Orioles are the Worst Team in Baltimore History

[ PHOTO: WJLA-WASHINGTON DC ]
September 19, 2018
Jace Evans, USA Today

The 2018 Orioles have made history: This is the worst squad in the team's 64 years in Baltimore.

With a 6-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Orioles picked up loss No. 108 on the season, the most the team has ever accumulated in a year since moving to Baltimore for the 1954 season.

With 11 games to go, and with series against the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros to end the campaign, the Orioles still have a realistic shot at setting the franchise's overall mark for futility. The 1939 St. Louis Browns hold that "record" at 111 losses.

O's Top Jays to End Skid

[ PHOTO: THE BALTIMORE SUN ]

BALTIMORE — Kendrys Morales took his cuts, and the ball didn’t go out of the park.

It happens all the time to the best players in the land. On this occasion, however, Morales’ homerless performance ended his attempt to make baseball history.

Morales had his home run streak snapped at seven games by the Baltimore Orioles, who ended an eight-game skid by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 7-0 on Monday night.

Striving to tie the major league record of homering in eight straight games, Morales went 0 for 3 with a walk and did not hit the ball out of the infield. In his final chance, he swung through a slider from Paul Fry to strike out in the eighth inning.

Orioles Stay Hot, Rout Rays 17-1

[ PHOTO: THE WASHINGTON POST ]
May 14, 2018
Eduardo A. Encina, The Baltimore Sun

The Orioles’ early-season tumble to the worst record in the major leagues was predicated by a bunch of patchwork lineups that were necessitated by injuries and inconsistency.

Now, just seven games into this nine-game homestand, the Orioles have put together their best stretch of baseball this season. Yes, it’s a reflection of how poorly this club played before this stretch, but out of nowhere, the Orioles are scoring runs in bunches and finally look more like their complete selves, and their 17-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays was an example of that.

The club has unquestionably benefited from the return of middle-of-the-order bats Jonathan Schoop and Mark Trumbo. But it is also now suddenly a team that is better able to put its pieces where they belong, and it’s resulted in recent wins.
