Hamilton Wins F1 Title, Verstappen Wins Mexican Grand Prix

MEXICO CITY — Lewis Hamilton keeps climbing his way up the list of Formula One’s greatest drivers.

The top now looks very much in sight.

The British driver won his fifth career F1 championship with a fourth-place finish Sunday at the Mexican Grand Prix. It was a race dominated by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, but one that will be remembered for Hamilton tying the late Juan Manuel Fangio of Argentina for the second-most championships in F1 history.

That Lewis Hamilton will clinch his fifth world championship in Mexico City on Sunday remains almost a certainty. Doing so with the celebratory flourish of victory however will require the British driver to be on absolutely top form after Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo claimed pole position, locking out the front row with his teammate Max Verstappen.

If it is a race contested with the same fierce competition that defined a thrilling qualifying, it should at least prove to be a memorable meeting at which the British driver wraps up the title.

Sebastian Vettel Must Delay Lewis Hamilton's Title Coronation at the United States Grand Prix

[ PHOTO: SKY SPORTS ]

Graham Caygill, The National

Sebastian Vettel has had plenty of low points over the past couple of months as his hopes of winning a fifth Formula One drivers’ title have faded away.

Spinning in Italy after contact with title rival Lewis Hamilton was one; picking the wrong tyre compound in Singapore was another. Careering backwards off track and falling to the back of the field after a brush with Max Verstappen in in Japan summed up the Ferrari driver's fortunes over the past four races.

Hamilton sits 67 points clear at the top of the drivers' standings and the Mercedes-GP driver can secure the championship with victory at Sunday's United States Grand Prix with victory and if Vettel finishes lower than third.

MERCEDES Lewis Hamilton has cruised to victory at the Japanese Grand Prix to take another major step towards his fifth Formula One world title.

Hamilton was helped by a rash overtaking move by Ferrari title rival Sebastian Vettel, who collided with Max Verstappen while trying to overtake the Dutch driver.

The accident on the eighth lap, after Vettel had moved from eighth on the grid to fourth, spun the Ferrari driver off the track, putting him back to 19th, before he eventually finished sixth.

Kimi Raikkonen Moves to Sauber, Replaced at Ferrari by Charles Leclerc

[ PHOTO: THE GUARDIAN ]

Alan Baldwin, Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - Kimi Raikkonen will not be going out of Formula One at the top, or even with a top team.

The announcement on Tuesday that the 2007 world champion is leaving Ferrari, the sport’s oldest, most glamorous and successful team, at the end of the season was only to be expected.

Less so was the subsequent revelation that the 38-year-old ‘Iceman’ had agreed a two-year deal to continue with Ferrari-powered Sauber in a swap with that team’s Monegasque rookie Charles Leclerc.

That will close a circle at least, the Swiss team being the ones who gave Raikkonen his debut in 2001 despite the powers-that-be fearing he was too inexperienced, and keep the Finn racing on into his 40s.

The Monday Morning Quarterback

Lewis Hamilton took the championship lead from Sebastian Vettel when the Mercedes driver won an eventful Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday.

Hamilton topped Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari, with Sergio Perez's Force India finishing third. Raikkonen's teammate Vettel, who started from the pole, took fourth place.

Hamilton now leads Vettel 70 to 66 in the drivers championship, with both seeking their fifth world title.

"It was quite an emotional race. Valtteri did an exceptional job and deserved to win, Sebastian also did a great job so it feels a bit odd to be up here," the victorious Hamilton said from the podium.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo smashed into the back of teammate Max Verstappen in a lap 40 collision that ended the race for both of them.

Carlos Sainz was fifth for Renault, and Charles Leclerc earned his first points, finishing sixth for Sauber.

Former world champion Fernando Alonso of McLaren, Canadian Lance Stroll of Williams, Stoffel Vandoorne in the second McLaren, and New Zealand's Brendon Hartley of Toro Rosso, rounded out the top ten.
