Astros Take 2-0 ALDS Lead After Indians Bullpen Falters

The Cleveland Indians once rode their bullpen to the doorstep of their first World Series title since 1948. Those days are long past, however, and soon, their latest shot to end their championship drought may be, too.

After suffering a 3-1 loss to the Houston Astros in Game 2 of their American League Division Series, the Indians are faced with a significant task: Win three consecutive games against the 103-win Astros.

They’re in this hole mostly for two reasons: The dominance of the Astros’ starting pitching, and the failings of their relief corps.

HOUSTON  — It's October and George Springer, Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman are all hitting home runs once again, helping the Houston Astros to a postseason win.

A year after launching a World Series-record 15 homers in winning their first championship, the Astros picked up right where they left off, hitting four home runs to power past the Cleveland Indians 7-2 Friday in Game 1 of the AL Division Series.

Martin Maldonado also connected for the Astros, who didn't waste any time displaying the same power that carried them to last year's title.

Astros Win West After A's Fall to Mariners

Mike Axisa, CBS Sports

The defending World Series champion Houston Astros are once again AL West champions.

Tuesday night, the Astros clinched their second straight AL West title thanks to their win over the Blue Jays (HOU 4, TOR 1) and the Mariners' walk-off win over the Athletics (SEA 10, OAK 8). The A's have been baseball's hottest team for a good three months now and at one point pulled even with the 'Stros in the AL West, but alas, they couldn't claim the division crown.

Mariners utility man Chris Herrmann swatted a walk-off home run against the A's to clinch the AL West title for the Astros on Tuesday.

Magic Number Down to 1 After Astros Win 100th Game

[ PHOTO: THE NEW YORK TIMES ]

Brian McTaggart, MLB.com

TORONTO -- The champagne is on ice.

The Astros reached 100 wins for the second year in a row, and third time in team history, and reduced their magic number to win their second consecutive American League West title to one with a 4-1 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre.

"It's hard to win in this league in general," Astros manager AJ Hinch said. "It's really hard to win in this league when everybody expects it and you have such a small margin for error when there's a reaction every time you don't win. To be at 100 and climbing is remarkable for this team, and we should be very proud."
