David Wright Goes to Bat for the First Time in Over Two Years

It was the bottom of the fifth inning at Citi Field, and Wright was receiving a standing ovation as he prepared for his first major-league at-bat in 28 months. This was the same kind of ovation he had received an inning earlier when he initially appeared on deck.
“I really felt butterflies that I had never felt before,” Wright said after the Mets’ 8-1 loss to the Marlins. “I think I was pretty close to throwing up on deck. I know I dropped my bat, and I never just let the bat fly. I had to walk a couple of steps to pick the bat back up.”

Things aren't so good in Queens these days. After starting the season 11-1, the Mets are currently sitting 11 games under 500, with no hope of playing in October. On Tuesday, starting pitcher Steven Matz gave Amazins fans a rare reason to smile, albeit in another losing effort for the club.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, with his team leading the Phillies 2-0, Matz made an incredible behind-the-back catch on a line drive by Philadelphia outfielder Roman Quinn, then threw to first to double up Rhys Hoskins. Take a look:

In the third inning, Matz took Cy Young contender Aaron Nola deep for his second home run of the year.

Despite Matz' big day, the Mets ultimately fell to the Phillies 5-2.
With the club limping to the finish of what has been a very long season, all Mets eyes are on the future, of which, Matz figures to be a big part of. Tuesday night, the 27-year old flamethrower showed us why. His future is bright.

David Wright Likely to Retire After Final Homestand

The longtime captain announced Thursday that when he returns for the final homestand of the season, those will be his final games as a Met. Wright, who has battled spinal stenosis the past few seasons, will be activated Sept. 25 and play third base for the Sept. 29 game against the Marlins.

Teammates have often marveled at Wright's resiliency, noting that they are not sure they could do the same if they were in his shoes.
Yet, Wright's commitment has never wavered, and he has made it clear that he plans to return and not let the injuries he's suffered end his career.
That day may finally be coming with the team set to provide an update Thursday on Wright that will feature good news, and possibly a target date for a return. Wright and COO Jeff Wilpon are scheduled to speak at a press conference.

Phillies Acquire Jose Bautista from Rival Mets

PHILADELPHIA—The
Philadelphia Phillies have acquired veteran slugger Jose Bautista from
the New York Mets for a player to be named later or cash.
Bautista batted .196 with 11 homers and 42 RBIs for the Braves
and Mets this season. The Phillies entered Tuesday night’s game against
Washington three and a half games behind Atlanta in the NL East.
A six-time All-Star for Toronto between 2010-2015, Bautista has 342
career homers. The right-handed hitter is expected to come off the bench
for the Phillies.

The Mets and Phillies were working on a deal for the 37-year-old outfielder on Monday after Philadelphia claimed him off revocable trade waivers, sources said. The teams have until 1 p.m. Tuesday to work out a deal.
A Bautista deal would be a relatively
low-stakes move for both teams. The Mets can avoid paying the final five
weeks of his league-minimum salary, and would hope to extract a
tangible return, be it a minor leaguer or international signing bonus
space.

Syndergaard was exactly the pitcher the Mets wanted in such a spot in 2016, but it’s not just Jacob deGrom and Zack Wheeler’s ascent that explains the change in pecking order. Syndergaard’s regression plays into it, too.
“I just feel like every five days right now I’m just kind of wasting my ability to throw a baseball,” Syndergaard said after his Dog Days of Summer continued Monday with a ragged performance in the Mets’ 7-4 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. “My stuff’s too good to go out there and go six innings and give up four runs with nine base hits. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.”

deGrom Exits Early, Mets Bullpen can't get Job Done Against Phillies

PHILADELPHIA — Mickey Callaway needed nearly a complete game from his bullpen Sunday, and he got it. It just wasn’t a very good game.
In the Mets’ 4-2 loss to the Phillies, four relievers combined to allow four runs, four walks and eight hits in seven innings after Jacob deGrom lasted only one.
Paul Sewald (0-3) coughed up the lead in the sixth on a three-run homer by Nick Williams. Jeurys Familia allowed Carlos Santana’s solo shot to center in the eighth.
“It was the wrong pitch in the wrong location,” Sewald said. “Down and in to a lefty is not where it’s supposed to be. I wasn’t tired or anything like that.”

The Monday Morning Quarterback
Zack Wheeler, who opened the season in the minors, made his case as perhaps the team’s third-best starter behind Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. He tossed five innings of two-run ball, striking out nine.
First baseman Adrian Gonzalez, facing the prospect of decreased playing time as the Mets think about playing Jay Bruce at first occasionally, contributed his biggest game as a Met. He went 3-for-6 with a home run, a double and five RBIs.
