Capitals Down Rangers and Pull Closer to Islanders

WASHINGTON - How badly did Evgeny Kuznetsov want to win on Sunday? He was even willing to get in Alex Ovechkin's way. Kuznetsov scored at 4 minutes 20 seconds of overtime, just beating his star teammate's stick to the puck, and the Washington Capitals defeated the Rangers, 6-5, in their return from their longest road trip this season.

Emotional day as Rangers trade Zuccarello to Stars for two picks

Let the moves begin. The New York Rangers started their trade deadline maneuvers by sending winger Mats Zuccarello to the Stars, according to TSN. The return is two conditional draft picks - a second-rounder in 2019 that would become a first-rounder if Dallas wins two playoff rounds (unlikely); and a third-rounder in 2020 that becomes a first-rounder if Dallas resigns the pending unrestricted free agent.

Islanders Fan Savagely Attacks Rangers Fan Outside Madison Square Garden

[ PHOTO: NEWSDAY ]
November 22, 2018
Peter Solari, Editor in Chief

In a city with two teams in every major professional sport, rivalries don't get more intense than the one between New York's two hockey clubs, and their die-hard fans.

The conflict has been pretty one-sided lately, as the Rangers were win-less in their last eight contests against their crosstown rivals, including a 7-5 loss to the Islanders last week in Brooklyn.

On Wednesday, the Rangers got a little revenge with a blowout win over the Islanders at Madison Square Garden.

Apparently, this was a little too much for one Islanders fan to handle, and he took his frustrations out on a Rangers fan by slicing him up like a New York pizza.

According to Fox News, the incident occurred at approximately 9:45 PM, as patrons were exiting the arena. A witness reported that a man wearing an Islanders jersey pulled out a knife and slashed a Rangers fan in the face and neck.

“It was two guys in hockey jerseys fighting it out. One was cutting the other. When we got there, he was bleeding and he was down.” said an MSG security guard.

“He was down and out,” added another witness. “He was bleeding from his nose to his cheek. Someone was holding his neck steady while another guy called 911.”

The alleged attacker, who was not identified in reports, was arrested. His motives for the attack remain unknown. The victim was taken to the hospital, and his condition was not immediately known.

Hockey is often criticized as being too violent of a sport, but the on-ice mischief is nothing compared to some of the antics you'll see in the stands (and elsewhere). This is just a sad commentary on the current state of sports fans.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Rangers are getting into a bad habit of allowing goals in the final minute of regulation. Fortunately for them, it hasn't cost them the last two times.

New York gave up a late goal for the third straight game — this time to Rickard Rakell with 25.3 seconds remaining — but was able to beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 in a shootout Thursday night.

Rangers Lose to Sabres, Fall to 0-2 on the Season

[ PHOTO: THE BUFFALO NEWS ]

Colin Stephenson, Newsday

BUFFALO — If an opening night matchup against the team with the best record in the NHL last season represented a measuring stick for the Rangers, then wouldn’t Saturday's game against the team with the worst record in the league be a different measuring stick for David Quinn’s club?

If so, what is there to be made of the Rangers’ 3-1 loss to the Sabres?

“I thought we played pretty well, but I don’t think we played winning hockey enough throughout the game,’’ Quinn said. “There’s a difference between playing well and playing winning hockey.’’

NEW YORK (AP) — The Nashville Predators liked the way a lot of things went in their season opener, especially since they came away with a win.

P.K. Subban scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period, and the Predators held on to beat New York 3-2 Thursday night and spoil the regular-season debut of new Rangers coach David Quinn.

"I thought we played a pretty good game," Subban said. "For our team, we're at our best when we're disciplined. At the end, I think we would've liked to shut it down a little sooner and quicker and a little easier, but we got it done."

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – Opening night is finally here, and the Rangers are raring to go.

“I think we’ve had a really good training camp, we had a good week of practice in between, and guys are excited,’’ Mika Zibanejad said after Wednesday’s practice. “Guys are looking forward to get this whole thing started, and you can feel it. It’s a little – not a little nervous, but you’re happy. You can see it in the guys’ eyes. Guys are excited to get started.’’

They’ll get started Thursday night at Madison Square Garden, when they host the Nashville Predators, who won the Presidents' Trophy last season as the team with the best record (53-18-11, 117 points) in the regular season.

How Close did the Rangers Come to Landing Wayne Gretzky in 1988?

[ PHOTO: SPORTS ON EARTH ]
August 13, 2018

NOTE: This story was originally written for and published on August 9, 2018.

Today is the 30th Anniversary of Wayne Gretzky's trade from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings.

Gretzky was traded to LA for a package that included Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, three future first-round (traded to NJ for Corey Foster, Marty Rucinsky, Nick Stajduhar) draft picks and $15 million.

Reports from the New York Times in 1988 indicate that Rangers GM Phil Espositio was approached by Edmonton GM Glen Sather about Gretzky at the draft that June.

The Oilers said that they approached the Rangers because their owners at the time, Gulf and Western, "could afford him."

Espositio said at the time that he was interested in Gretzky but that once they started discussing terms he lost interest.
