Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase interviewed for the Giants' head coaching vacancy on Friday, but he might be off the market by Saturday. ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Gase has emerged as the front-runner in Miami's search for a new coach, and that the Dolphins have called him back for a second interview. Gase is the only candidate Miami has scheduled a second interview with. The NFL Network's Ian Rappaport had reported that Gase would be back in Philadelphia for a second interview with the Eagles this weekend, but CSN Philadelphia is reporting that no such interview has been set.
There was some speculation that Monday Night Football analyst/ex-Buccaneers and Raiders coach Jon Gruden was interested in the Eagles job, but according to Gruden, he's "not interested". Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo remains in the running in both Philadelphia and New York.
McAdoo doesn't appear to be drawing much interest from anyone outside the Giants and Eagles, which could bode well for New York. The Giants would love to keep McAdoo on as offensive coordinator, should they go in another direction for head coach, and if the Eagles hire someone other than him, nothing appears to be standing in the way of New York retaining McAdoo. However, if Gase ends up with the Dolphins, McAdoo's chances of being hired in Philadelphia, will increase.
The Giants will interview Doug Marrone, the former head coach in Buffalo and at Syracuse University, on Saturday, and don't have any other interviews scheduled. They were believed to be interested in Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, as well, but no interview has been scheduled. McDermott has already interviewed in Cleveland, and is scheduled to interview with Tampa Bay this weekend. The Panthers have a bye this week, but will open their playoff next weekend, so an interview with the Giants isn't likely, until Carolina's season ends, if at all.
The Giants are also believed to have interest in a number of other coordinators whose teams are in the playoffs, so a hire may not be close. However, if the Giants start inviting candidates back for second interviews next week, then we will know that they've narrowed their search.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Giants linebacker Jon Beason told SiriusXM NFL Radio that he will be having surgery on his knee, and that if his body doesn't respond to the rehab, he may be forced to retire. The Giants acquired Beason from the Panthers in 2013, for a seventh-round draft pick. Beason played well when he arrived in New York, and the Giants awarded him with a three-year contract before the 2014 season. Since then, injuries have plagued Beason, and he's only appeared in nine games the past two season.
