The Giants interviewed offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo for their head coaching vacancy on Tuesday, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on Thursday. Also on Thursday, the team met with Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin.
Austin, who has also interviewed with Miami and Cleveland, and is scheduled to meet with Philadelphia, is the first candidate from outside the organization to meet with the team's front office, but he won't be the last.
The Giants will interview Chicago offensive coordinator Adam Gase on Friday, and Jacksonville assistant head coach Doug Marrone on Saturday.
Like Austin, Gase is a hot coaching commodity around the NFL this offseason. He's already interviewed in Philadelphia, Miami, and Cleveland on top of his scheduled meeting with the Giants. He previously served as offensive coordinator in Denver and was the front-runner to be named head coach in San Francisco last year. The 49ers passed him up for their defensive line coach, Jim Tomsula, who only lasted one season at the helm.
Marrone, who is also drawing interest from Miami and Cleveland, is a former head coach at Syracuse and with the Bills. He left Buffalo after the 2014 season, when he exercised an opt-out clause in his contract, which allowed him to still collect his salary for 2015. At that time, Marrone was believed to be one of the hottest coaches available, and the front-runner to land the Jets' job. After a terrible interview with their front office, the Jets passed on Marrone and hired Todd Bowles, who lead the team to a 10-6 record this past season.
Outside of Gase and Marrone, the Giants don't have any other interviews scheduled, but that is likely to change. They reportedly have interest in speaking to Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. All three of them are currently preparing for the playoffs with their respective teams, though John Boarman of Tireball Sports, is reporting that McDermott could interview with New York before the Panthers play their divisional round playoff game next week.
The Giants reportedly also have interest in former Buccaneers' head coach Lovie Smith, but nothing has been made official.
While it's still possible for new names to emerge for the Giants, Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia comes to mind, it isn't likely for a candidate who isn't already available, to suddenly become attainable.
IN OTHER NEWS:
On Thursday, Giants vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross interviewed with the Tennessee Titans for their vacant general manager post. Ross has been an up-and-comer in the league for several years, in which time he's interviewed for various GM positions. The Giants' decision not to fire their GM, Jerry Reese, could very well mean the end of Ross' tenure in New York
Giants assistant general manager Kevin Abrams will interview for the vacant GM job in Detroit. The Lions have hired former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi to assist their search. Abrams has been with New York since 1999, when he was hired by Accorsi.
