This story broke a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't pay it much attention at the time, believing it was more hype than fact. However, as weeks pass, and former New York Giants' safety Antrel Rolle remains on the open market, the possibility of his return to New York, doesn't seem so far-fetched.
Rolle, who the Giants couldn't afford to pay after the 2014 season, was released by the Chicago Bears after one, injury-shortened season in the Windy City. Before landing in the midway, the former first round pick spent 10 seasons (five apiece) with the Arizona Cardinals and Giants. He was a major contributor on two Super Bowl teams, including the 2008 Cardinals and the 2011 Giants, with whom he won his only professional championship.
When Rolle first arrived at the Meadowlands in 2011, there was a bit of a rift between him and then-coach Tom Coughlin. However, the two quickly moved past that and grew to respect each other over their time together, including an upset victory over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots after the 2011 season. In fact, Rolle defended his former coach when the Giants forced him out of his job earlier this year.
Over his tenure in New York, Rolle became one of Coughlin's most trusted and reliable defensive players, and was the vocal leader of that unit, especially after Justin Tuck left for Oakland following the 2013 season. This was especially true in former-defensive coordinator Perry Fewell's three-safety sets, which was a staple under Fewell's guidance.
Prior to last season, Rolle signed a five year, $11.25 million contract with the Bears, and expected to end his career there. However, a shoulder injury landed him on injured reserve, and Chicago released him after playing only seven games with the club.
Even at age 33, Rolle was still a productive NFL player, and his release was likely more about his injury than his ability. After his release, Rolle assured his fans he was back at full strength by tweeting the following:
Upon his release from Chicago, Rolle told SiriusXM NFL Radio that he would definitely be open to a Big Blue reunion, saying
“New York is where my heart is, man. I think everyone knows that. I’ve never hidden it. New York is where the heart is. New York is where I feel comfortable. New York is a place where I would love to play. You know, there’s a difference playing for an organization, you know, you’re there to play and to win, and you’re there because that’s where your contract is. And there’s a difference in playing where your heart is. I would absolutely be open to the situation if it presents itself. Obviously it would have to make sense for both [sides]. The New York Giants, I think it would definitely make sense for both myself and the team. But let’s see what happens.”If the Giants could pick up Rolle at a minimal risk, it's definitely something they should be interested in. They can't lock him up to any kind of long term deal, due to the uncertainty surrounding his injury, but the team could definitely use a safety. Right now, second year standout Landon Collins, and rookie third round draft pick Darian Thompson are the best they've got. In his time with New York, it wasn't uncommon for Rolle to step in at cornerback either.
It's also worth noting that the New York fans would likely welcome Rolle back with open arms, as well. Not to mention the WFAN midday team of Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts, who provided some of the most entertaining interviews on Tuesdays, during Rolle's firs stint with the Giants.
The Giants' lack of depth at defensive back is enough reason for them to at least kick the tires, but this doesn't sound like anything that will be done soon. While it would be wise for the fans to remain patient on this one, a Big Blue/Rolle reunion could be imminent.
